#bhm16 Recap
Today is the last day of #BHM2k16 and in all honesty this has been by far the best one I’ve ever experienced. Now if I’m allowed to be completely honest (which I am because this is my blog *Cardi B laughs*), I love black history month but I hate that all we were taught in school is the sugar sweet things that they were comfortable enough to put in our curriculum. There’s so much more to black history than what they want us to know and that’s why every year their forcing our kids to learn more and more about a man who the government killed but now white people want to celebrate him. I think its extremely important to broaden your children’s and even your own knowledge of our ancestors and things that they’ve done for us. Although we haven’t made it to where we'd like to be, we’ve come a long way. This month has been FULL of events that has kept the white tears rolling and black cheers carefree and unapologetic. From Beyoncé once-again performing laser hair removal on our edges, Gods of Egypt flopping, #TrapCovers, and even Kendrick Lamar’s controversial aka dese white folks uncomfortable again performance, Stacey Dash got traded for Gary Owens in the Racial Draft, Cam didn't win the superbowl but he still fine tho, and Deray McKesson is running for Mayor in Baltimore, we’ve had a pretty successful month. I’ve asked a couple of my friends what their favorite moments were, so let’s recap #bhm2016!
Krystal Lynn: “BEYONCE. The video she made, plus the performance she did at the Super bowl. I thought the performance and message was phenomenal, she really touched on what’s going on today which gained a lot of attention (some good, some bad) and this is what we needed to see coming from an artist that huge. My opinion on why some people (aka white people) didn’t understand the message is because they’ve never been through or felt such pain, hopelessness, and loneliness. I mean, this is real life. Some say, “it isn’t fair” or “its selfish.” No it’s not. We NEED a voice, we NEED to be heard, we NEED to be woke. Not neglected.”
Rachel Danielle: "One of my favorite incidents of #bhm2016 this year was the conversation between The Breakfast Club's, Charlamagne the God, and Tomi Lahren. This interview gave a clear perspective on how easily we can get under their(racists) skin if we simply join together. Also, I was proud of Charlamagne dropping serious knowledge on her without being the ignorant funny guy he usually is."
Jalyn Reaves: "I think formation sparked the talk that needed to be had because people are still confused about the #blacklivesmatter movement. Kendrick made sure that they never forget what we went through to get where we are and they still don't give us what we deserve and the blackish episode sparked reality. For those who think because "I have a black friend" or "we adopted a black child" letting them know that they don’t actually know what we go through. They'll never understand it. It’s the reality that people have to teach their kids to act in a manner where you don't get shot or killed while in police custody. It’s the reality of #blacklivesmatter that we understand but they don’t. This blackish episode was a groundbreaking reality of what America is now."
Brianna Nykohl: ‘There's been too many moments to only choose one but if I HAD to (after formation scalping me) this past week’s episode of black;ish topped it off! We NEEDED this episode for obvious reason but the topic centered around police brutality and really focused in on how do we go about being honest with our black children that we are raising in this world. It's a harsh reality because young black people are being murdered by police and there's NO JUSTICE being served. I'm not a parent but I have an 11-year-old brother and it scares me to know that anything can happen to him and no justice being served because he is black and this system was never designed to protect us! As a community we are all frustrated and feel hopeless because time and time again we put our faith in the one organization that's supposed to "protect" us. Thank you Kenya Barris for successfully delivering an important message while still mixing in some laughs. This war on our people has yet to stop but one day I have hope and faith in God that we won't have to deal with this any longer! #blacklivesmatter”
Teryka Jones: "While nothing really interesting happened in my life personally this black history month lol I would have to say that one of my favorite moments of this month had to be of course Beyoncé’s breath taking Super Bowl Collaboration performance with Bruno Mars and Cold Play. Even though she was faced with some advertsity because of the strong racial remarks that were addressed in her new single Formation and some of the gestures that were made during her performance, I personally believe this was the right way to speak up for our African American culture. Of course somebody will always disagree and take an offense, but this was something that needed to be expressed and should be expressed more often and what better time to do it during this black history month so big ups to Queen Bey once again!"
Angela Blakely: "My favorite part of this year would have to be Beyoncé releasing and slaying all of us to pieces with the Formation song and video. The fact that she took the time out to make video just to touch basis on the common issues in Black America makes me love her even more."
