Poems... Unpeeled by angela Blakely:
We are now 3 weeks into Queen Bey's highly anticipated (but secretive) 6th album titled Lemonade. In this masterpiece, she allows you to channel her vulnerability, anger, and happy moments but most importantly, her black girl magic all through the eyes of her and past experiences.
As a feminist, Beyoncè has always been known to stand wholeheartedly for women in her everyday life and music Yet, Lemonade took it to a new level when she gave black women everything we needed and more. With a quote from the late Malcolm X, emotional scenes of black mothers whose sons were slain due to police brutality, and appearances from pop cultures favorite black girls such as Zendaya, Serena Williams, Amandla Stenberg, and many more. America has always portrayed black women as the bottom of the barrier. But, Beyoncè made sure to give us our power back. Her strength in this body of work gave young, middle, and old black girls inspiration to feel comfortable in our skin, something that isn't always accepted in America. Thanks to her we can wear our skin is our armor.
Also, the queen included adaptions of poems from the young but wise, Warsan Shire. Warsan is a poet, editor, and teacher from London. In between visuals, Beyoncè uses a voice over as she recites Shire poems making references to the sacrifices she made for her husband, cheating allegations and the relationships between her, her mother and her father. She managed to capture Warsan's message with beautiful imagery in her visuals and staggering titles such as "Denial", "Intuition", and "Emptiness".
